The B.A in Literature in English or BA e-Lit offers a three-year literature program packed with hands on study into literatures from the various shores including the English canon as studied in The West in Narration, as well as the local literary tradition in Malaysia In Narration. In addition, we also offer introductory courses like Critical Appreciation and Introduction to Genres as well as theory based courses such as Reading Approaches, Worlds in Contact and Investigative Stylistics. The BA e-Lit also allows students opportunities to discover other literary traditions within the discipline of literature in courses such as Young Adult Literature and Science as Narrative. And as the program prides itself for being current and socially aware, the courses offered also reflect our aspiration. Literature and the Media, and Gender Identities: Malaysian Perspectives are two of our courses that directly engage students to form critical and insightful opinions about the state of media making and gender construction, respectively.
The school also offers an M.A in Postcolonial Literature in English or M.A PC Lit, the first of its kind in Malaysia. This is another engaging program that allows students the space to deepen their appreciation and interests in the study of literature from a postcolonial perspective.
Our postgraduate literature programme offers profesional training in literary research, theory, criticism, as well as teaching of literature and writing. The MA PC Lit is a three-semester program which comprises 6 compulsory courses, 3 elective courses, and a thesis. The compulsory courses are as follows: Critical Theory; Postcolonial Theory and Issues; Malaysian Literature in English; Research Methodology in Literary Studies; Re-reading Canonical Texts; and Parameters in Comparative Literature.
Students may choose their 3 electives from these courses: Nation and Narration; Occidental Perspectives on Malaysia; Literature in Translation; Literary Studies in Action; and Literature and Popular Culture. Full time students can start writing their thesis in the third semester.
The programme brings together graduate students and faculty members who have varied and current research interests as reflected in the courses offered. In this way, the student’s own trajectory of his/her particular interest can be nurtured and further developed to create an intellectual and pedagogic space in collaboration with their academic mentors.
